Child Protection Information - CRB checks

New Update - 5th May 2011

Until such time as the ISA requirements are re-established by the government, please note that all BAB CRB checks should be renewed every 3 years. If you have any queries then please contact your Association CPO, or Sue Ward, Lead Safeguarding Officer by email -

Enhanced CRB checks (undertaken through the BAB) are required for all those working with (and having direct supervisory access to) children. The list of those requiring checks would include: instructors, assistant instructors, helpers, assistants, drivers, officials, referees etc;  this list is not intended to be exhaustive but just to give you a guide.

Those holding senior positions in organisations which accept under 18s may also be required to undertake CRB checks. The common term for this is 'the great and the good'. If you need help in deciding who in this category should be checked then contact the BAB Lead CPO. It is likely that those in this category would be Heads of Association, Membership Secretaries (or anyone who processes information relating to children).

CRB checks will be processed through Association CPOs and their approved verifiers, and should be renewed every 3 years.

CRB checks for volunteers are free - but we have to pay a fee to our processing organisation. This fee is £18.00 for paper applications and £12.60 for online application this charge is passed directly to this organisation (the BAB does not make any money from the CRB process).

The CRB defines a volunteer as : " a person engaged in an activity which involves spending time, unpaid (except for travel and other approved out-of-pocket expenses), doing something which aims to benefit some third party other than or in addition to a close relative."

For those who do not fit the definition of volunteer, a CRB fee of £44 PLUS the £12.50 admin fee will be charged (Enhanced Disclosure).

The responsibility for checking members, and for ensuring that checks are renewed every 3 years, rests with the BAB Member Associations and their Clubs.

Please note that a child is anyone under the age of 18.
