Riverside Walks
From
Higginson Park, Marlow to Temple Lock (2 1/2 miles return) or Hurley
(3 1/2 miles return)
The
Thames Path National Trail passes through Marlow en-route from the
Cotswolds to London.
Join it by the river in Higginson Park, heading away from the
bridge. Walk on
through meadows to see 12th century Bisham Abbey on the
opposite bank. Next
comes Temple Lock and its seasonal cafe.
Retrace your steps to Marlow or go on past Temple
Lock and cross the river by
the footbridge.
Walk through the meadow to another footbridge
leading
to a river island and on to Hurley Lock.
Beyond the lock return to the riverbank via another
footbridge and take the steps leading down into the lane and to the
pretty little village of Hurley.
Just before Ye Olde Bell Inn turn left onto a narrow footpath
which soon meets a wider track passing between a caravan park and
field. Near
the white house at the end of the field, turn left through the
kissing gate onto a footpath leading back to the river.
Turn right at the river to return to Marlow.
From
Marlow to Bourne End
(6 miles
return) Walk down
the High Street towards the church and river.
Pass the George & Dragon and enter the churchyard through the
gates ahead (signed To Marlow Lock and Bourne End).
Turn immediately left and follow the footpath out of the
churchyard into an alley, which emerges in St. Peter's Street.
Take the alley immediately to the right of the Two Brewers
pub (signed Thames Path) and on reaching Mill Road turn right and
follow the road. Turn right onto the footpath, which leads to the
river, signed Thames Path.
Follow this along the river, the Quarry Wood on the far bank
- said to be Kenneth Grahame's inspiration for the Wild Wood in
Wind in the Willows.
Follow the path through meadows to Bourne end.
Cross the river at the railway bridge and a mile further on
to Cookham's Stanley Spencer Gallery,
the village where the artist was born and worked
There
are plenty of Tea Shops and Pubs offering refreshments
Bisham
