National Aikido Federation

History

Michael Narey founded the National Aikido Federation in 1980 as a federation of Aikido clubs who wished to practise within the broad framework of Aikido developed in mainland Europe by Tamura Shihan. When the NAF was founded, Tamura Shihan agreed to become its Technical Director. However that role passed to Tamura`s long time French disciple, Pierre Chassang who was the founder of the National Aikido Federation of France and the European section of the International Aikido federation. Since the death of Pierre this role has been continued by Sensei Narey

The roots of the NAF Aikido lie with Shihan Nobuyoshi Tamura who was the European Representative of the Ueshiba hombu Dojo in Tokyo. While Technical Director of the NAF he was the senior Japanese sensei in Europe and was particularly renowned for the purity and classicism of his technique. His work was continued by Pierre Chassang who liked to emphasise the importance of Aikido as both a martial and spiritual way. This work continues with Sensei Narey who aligns traditional aikido with modern teaching methodology
