Author: Hachiko
Subject: I think Tomiki Aikido is better than all the rest!
Posted: 14 Jan 2013 at 9:22pm

Sorry for resurrecting such an old thread....actually, is it a matter of regret that this forum is generating new interest? :)

I'd just like to add that as had been said, in my experience there is more variety that carries the label of 'Tomiki' than some outside and even within Tomiki admit awareness of.

Tomiki's primary thing was not competition but his belief in a clear ordered syllabus to enable students to know where they stood and be able to understand in a more clearly tangible way how they progressed.

Others who practised with Tomiki adopted his method of teaching within his clear framework and some of those completely disagreed with the idea of any kind of competition within aiki and refused to attend such events; already in dismay at how they perceived Judo to have abandoned its essence to a large extent in pursuit of being a Sport. Messrs Nariyama and Shishida and their colleagues at the top of their successful organizations are entirely aware of this. However, technically all those practitioners are Tomiki because they adopted his syllabus.

However, to show the common blood that can be found in aiki, my own teacher was as described above, carrying the Tomiki label without competition, but the teacher I've found whose style and philosophy are most similar to my own teacher's is Maruyama Sensei, who falls under the auspices of Ki aiki. I'm now practising within the Traditional world and am glad to find that there are a lot more body throws in proportion to projections in comparison to my other experience, which would suit my teacher who said that aiki and 'real' Judo are the same.

Even in a small tiny corner of one style of aikido, one class or teacher's style can suit each of us on a small part of one technique more than another. What is right or best is only what is right or best for you, here and today. If I like Canon lenses but Nikon bodies, it is what it is and there's a way forward on your own unique path without denying that.

On a final point, the perennial argument of who is closer to what Ueshiba taught/wanted/intended can never be answered, any more than we can say that a river is exactly the same from one moment to the next. Ueshiba Sensei's teachings changed throughout his life and just as how ten people looking at a mug of coffee will have a slightly different view of it, each equally correct, even if we were all stood in the room with him no one person can see the whole of anything.

I wish you all the best.
