As I am also a Judo Coach I would recommend that you first try Judo, With a child that is already a sports player they will find it quite easy to move to Judo then at a suitable age they can try Aikido, Judo will teach them breakfalls, and how to break the balance and throw where as the other two you suggested teach them to punch.

Steve Billett

Edited by Webmaster - 16 Sep 2010 at 3:50pm

He has always shown interest and has been watching videos of O-Sensei & others sinse he was 4 or 5. I enquired of my local aikikai (Gloucester) several years ago and was told we must wait until he was at least 7. Now I have asked again and was told there is no programme for children and that to study/practice there he must be 16. The nearest dojo that advertises teaching children (that I have found on this site) is about 1:30 drive away in Salisbury or in Oxford.

Can anyone recommend a course of study that will benefit an eight year old that will lend itself into Aikido in the future (Judo, TaiKwonDo, Karate)? I was hoping that he would learn the balance, grounding, discipline, language and basic skill, at an early age. He is an avid ice hockey player (Swindon) and something of an expert on ice skates. I have thought that Aikido would be perfect for his development.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

With many thanks in advance,
CBurr
