Ahhhh, I never even thought about the fact that for many people, their grade certificate may well be in Japanese! Mind you, having said that then my first 2 are in French and the newly acquired 3rd one will be in Japanese whenever it arrives.
I guess part of my problem with the BAB saying they recognise Fred Bloggs as a 7th dan is what if fred blogs came out of nowhere, started his own club / association and grew to the required minimum number to join the BAB, his Aikido looks ok, but in reality he's only done it for 5 years or so. Not likely, but not impossible. Then he has a certificate stating the BAB recognise him as a 7th dan. Hopefully this sort of thing would be policed somehow? Just playing devils advocate, knowing the issues with grades from the past. |

But surely if you go down this route, you are basically saying that if your grade is not validated by the BAB then it is not accepted? What criteria would this be validated against? What if an association did not offer their grades for validation? The BAB should have nothing to do with grades or validation of grades or compling of grades, what's next a BAB grading? The BAB is an umbrella for a number of aikido associations to come together to have a recognised voice with Sport England and therefore the government, not to validate Aikido standards. If this is the case, which is what it sounds like, then it is wrong. I appreciate that council's would not and do not understand the politics of the situation and therefore maybe this is something the BAB should be doing instead of concerning themselves with grades. But saying that, some council's do not recognise the CRB checks that you have to have done via the BAB and you are asked to have their one's as well.
I think the BAB should be concerned at getting cheaper insurance for its members (means not putting the prices up unless the insurance companies dictate, as stated in the minutes, £3 seems a lot considering there some better deals out there for comparable cover), disseminating information, including current coaching theories etc (NB doesn't seem to be a lot of level 2 or 3 courses available either). It should leave the Aikido, it's grades, and the standards within, to the associations themselves.
Regards,
Pete

Hi Pete
The BAB's intention is not to take anything away from any association, but only provide a service to those that need it. I also think that they are looking at everything you suggested as well. But remember everyone will see all of these things differently. Think back a year or 2 ago your opinion would have counted for much because it would have been hard to tell the BAB Exec what you think. Now you are aware that the BAB Chairman reads the forums and takes note of what the members are saying.
By the way these are only my opinon not those of the BAB.......
All the best in Aikido
