Hi to all young aikido players,
We have been requested to set up a forum purely for young people and children.
Use this area to tell the BAB what you want from the website, or just chat to each other about your aikido, classes, coaches (Good or Bad)

My apologies if this post is off topic, but I need help.
I live in Stroud in Gloucestershire and have been seeking Aikido instruction for my 8 year old son. He has always shown interest and has been watching videos of O-Sensei & others sinse he was 4 or 5. I enquired of my local aikikai (Gloucester) several years ago and was told we must wait until he was at least 7. Now I have asked again and was told there is no programme for children and that to study/practice there he must be 16. The nearest dojo that advertises teaching children (that I have found on this site) is about 1:30 drive away in Salisbury or in Oxford. Can anyone recommend a course of study that will benefit an eight year old that will lend itself into Aikido in the future (Judo, TaiKwonDo, Karate)? I was hoping that he would learn the balance, grounding, discipline, language and basic skill, at an early age. He is an avid ice hockey player (Swindon) and something of an expert on ice skates. I have thought that Aikido would be perfect for his development. Can anyone make any suggestions? With many thanks in advance, CBurr |

Hi
Yes Aikido would be perfect........
I have found 3 clubs which i think are close too you on our map serach, It's best to phone them as maybe they have not advertised that they teach children.
But, myself I will not teach Aikido to Children under the age of 14. As I am also a Judo Coach I would recommend that you first try Judo, With a child that is already a sports player they will find it quite easy to move to Judo then at a suitable age they can try Aikido, Judo will teach them breakfalls, and how to break the balance and throw where as the other two you suggested teach them to punch.

I don't know whether this will be of any use to you, as we are probably too far away, but i train at an aikido club in weston-super-mare. We teach children from the age of 5 upwards on Saturday mornings.

Hi, I happened across this forum and was debating whether or not I still qualified as a "young person" and shortly after deciding that if I had to ask the answer was probably "no", but before disappearing, I noticed your post. We are based in the centre of Bristol right next to Templemeads train station and have classes for children on Saturday mornings; (www.templegatedojo.org.uk). It might be too far but figured I would mention it whilst I'm here and try to be useful. We have a contact form via our website if you've any queries or feel free to PM me on here. Cheers ("Young") Rich Edited by rich - 25 May 2011 at 12:19pm |
