Hi Everyone. I was just wondering. Does anyone know when was it decided to change the Basic 15 (with only 15 techniques )into the Randori no kata with 17? AND WHY this was???? Could it have been to make Tomiki more sport orientated. I just thought it was an interesting Question Thank You for Your time in these matters. Danny.p |

The 17 randori no kata was introduced in the early 1960's through the introduction of free play. The old basic 15 have links to the Aikibudo taught pre-war and the early post war aikido. Many of the techniques have a deflection type movement rather than a taisabaki movement. Looking at early footage of our system Tomiki & Obha sensie experimented a lot with various techniques before finalising the various kata.
The basic 15 dates back to the mid 1950' these wer introduced to the UK by Senta Yamada in 1959.
