Should one continue to train at a dojo if one does not respect the sensei or the sensei's aikido? Not being from the uk, I wondered how things are viewed there. Do you just get on with it or should one speak out.

Hi

In my opinion as a coach and a tutor of coaches, If you have a great or just a good coach your lucky, If you don't then its time to assess what you want.

If it was one of my class i would hope they would say something to me, Probally not in the middle of a class but after when nobody was listerning.

Or find a new club to train at.

At my own club I have a few people that have arrived from other clubs for various reasons, We receive them with open arms. But I must say not all coaches are the same so you must access your current coach and decide what to do.

Have you considered that its not him but you..... May be he/she is not the coach for you.

I do not think it is possible to really make much progress if you do not respect the teacher.  I suggest that you look around until you find someone you are happy with.

IS THERE A SHORTAGE OF DECENT COACHES IN YOUR OPINION THEN?

If it was one of my class i would hope they would say something to me, Probally not in the middle of a class but after when nobody was listerning.

YOU SOUND LIKE THE SORT OF COACH WHO IS OPEN ENOUGH TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE ELSE'S OPINION...NOT EVERYONE IS.

Or find a new club to train at.

IT IS DIFFICULT TO LEAVE ALL YOUR DOJO FRIENDS

At my own club I have a few people that have arrived from other clubs for various reasons, We receive them with open arms. But I must say not all coaches are the same so you must access your current coach and decide what to do.

THIS IS PART OF THAT PROCESS

Have you considered that its not him but you..... May be he/she is not the coach for you.

I HAVE CONSIDERED THIS....IF IT WAS JUST MYSELF I WOULD NOT EVEN HAVE POSTED IN THE MANY AIKIDO FORUMS FOR ADVICE.....TO WHICH I WOULD LIKE TO ADD MY GRATITUDE FOR YOUR IMPARTIAL WISEDOM

Hi DanOne

I think it sounds like you have answered your own questions and its time for you to look around. I do understand about your friends at your dojo. Some of my greatest friends are one's have or currently do train with me. (Note the train with not under).

You asked about a shortage of good coaches,  What I consider is good coach might not be your choice. I am quite a friendly coach and teach mainly in english. After having worked for 17 years in a japanese company I understand the japanese nation quite well and I don't feel I have to try and emulate them on the mat. I look at my class size and think if i am teaching well. Currently we have around 40 people training and most of them have been with me for years. I dont give out Dan grades easliy or quickly but normally have around 7 coaches on the mat.  I think I am doing ok! But one can always improve.
