Just throwing this out there for some feedback...

One of the things I always wanted the BAB to run, in my previous life as a member of the exec, was for a course perhaps once a year 6 months away from the BAB National Course whereby the teachers would not be high grade teachers, it could be a great event for everyone, young and old (in aikido terms) to get together and see what the young and upcoming teachers of tomorrow are doing today.

Teaching slots could be relatively short, say, 30 or 40 minutes to allow a good few different styles and influences to share their views on Aikido.

I'd like to think that some of the more established teachers would be interested in seeing what the younger guys and girls are up to and should be a lot of fun...

Regards,

John

It would be yes... I'm not sure it will ever see the light of day however, lol.

Maybe if enough people comment on this thread, We will get some younger coaches, But it depends what you call young, at 52 some still call me young, then I run up and kiss them.

I for one will be voting for some courses run by the under 35's and even under younger, Also we should see more ladies teaching. I know my class prefers my wife to teach sometimes.

Hi Steve,

I meant young in Aikido terms not really age... So, people who are a lower grade, say between 1st dan and 4th dan who aren't the heads or senior teachers in an organisation. I don't even know how people would be chosen or found but it would be good for those with slightly different or new approaches to Aikido to get some exposure and not for them to be carbon copies of their teachers (pet hate of mine!).

I did speak to Vincent about this a long time ago and he did seem interested!

oops, my comments about the potential teacher not being a senior teacher or head of their organisation kind of goes out the window if said senior teacher / head happens to be 'just' a 4th dan ;)

Yes, as you probally noticed I am just a low graded 4th Dan and Chairman of the ADS. But then if you look at my grading history, I started in 1976 and and finally became a 1st Dan in 1991, that was only because my sensi forgot to grade me. Having been a 2nd at Judo when I started he never made me take my black belt off., but thats another story.

I don't think grade matters, but youthfull aikido on display is a great idea. All Associations must have there own up and coming young (ish) performers and it will be nice to see them on display. Because they are the future of Aikido in the UK.

PS Everyone is moaning at me about grading as i have been a 4th Dan for 10 years..%3cmile

I wouldn't call a 4th Dan a low grade. Iam sure that there are many young up and coming aikidoka who could teach on a course. To be honest the junior dan grades are the backbone of Aikido in this country.

It kind of depends really, but I wouldn't usualy consider a 4th dan a low grade either but it's still relatively rare to get anyone under 5th dan teaching on the main BAB course hence the suggestion we could have another open course for the unkown guys and girls teaching Aikido out there. It's not uncommon for someone in Japan who goes to university and studies a martial art to come out 4 years later at least a 3rd dan, in this case I'd consider them still an Aikido baby :). Of course, that's in Japan. Mind you, I've been doing Aikido for probably 15 years or so and I'm still an Aikido baby!

May I suggest Andy Mclean fro Coventry Chowa Ryutsu Ryu?
He has some interesting takes on standard techniques, and I beleive has an awesome teaching ability. Plus hes a lowley 4th Dan and 35 years old. You cant lose with him, whether teaching breakfalls or koshinage, he always brings something new to the table, and surprises you by getting you to do it!
