The club instructors of the Cinque Port Club who arranged this brilliant event.

Some 70 students, plus a number of juniors, enjoyed a great weekends training at Hawkinge, Kent, with a variety of styles on offer including Traditional, Tomiki and Yoshinkan, plus some Judo influences.

This is becoming a bit of an annual family event where clubs from UK Shinwakai and the Aikido Development Society, plus other friends, forget about their individual styles and just focus on aikido. The Sensei included Jack Poole 7th Dan, Leslie White 6th dan, Roy Sheppard 6th dan, John Jenkin 6th dan, Marill Poole 5th dan, Joe McEnroe 4th dan, Steve Billett 4th dan, Tony Evangelo 4th dan and Jerry Newton 4th dan.

A busy training programme gave us the opportunity to experience the full range of aikido forms from hand and kneeling techniques, to weapons taking and formal kata, plus two sessions on defence against kicks, an area which is often ignored.

Of course we mustn’t forget the evenings “training” which started with 42 students visiting the local Chinese Buffet Restaurant, where the owners must have thought about taking down the “eat as much as you like” signs, and then this was followed by the odd drink at a variety of venues. For those who still had some stamina, in the morning, it was a walk along the seafront, at Folkestone, before breakfast, and then back to the Dojo.

The Hawkinge Centre offers good facilities, including a very large dojo, plus smaller one for juniors and anyone who wants to join us next year, would be most welcome.

Our thanks to Sensei Joe McEnroe for organising the event
