Insurance Updates 2009

Following discussions with Perkins Slade the following additional information has been obtained:-

1. Insurance for participants on courses run by BAB Associations

 (i) Non BAB Students

Any student unable to produce evidence of current BAB insurance is required to obtain the necessary insurance cover by taking out temporary membership, for the day, with a BAB Association ( which in the majority of cases will be the body organising the event).

The Association may charge a fee for this facility to cover the actual cost of insurance (£1.40) and to cover reasonable administrative costs. Details of the student are then entered on the monthly BAB returns to Perkins Slade, in the normal way. An insurance certificate is NOT issued to the student, as this might subsequently be used, by them, as documentation to erroneously show that they were in individual membership of the BAB.

2. Non BAB Instructors The following applies to both British and overseas instructors.

Although these are not covered by the BAB’s existing policies, Perkins Slade would not be happy for them to receive “Temporary cover” as this would only be valid for one day, and in the event of say injuries /complaints of techniques taught etc, arising later, then the BAB could be liable.

In these cases, it is acceptable for the course organisers to accept the Instructors own current Insurance, provided that it is comparable to the BAB PI Instructor cover. Because Instructors are known in advance it is possible to check and clear the insurance in before the event.

Perkins Slade have suggested that the Instructor be asked to obtain a “to whom it may concern” letter from their insurers, setting out the extent of their Liability Insurance.

3. Cover for Older Members

(i) Students From 1st April the upper age limit for PA insurance cover has been increased from 75 to 80 years of age. However Permanent Total Disablement benefit only applies to members up to age 65 years, unless they are in full-time employment.

(ii) Instructors There is no age limitation in respect of PI cover for BAB Instructors
