Did you know...
... each year we benchmark each CSP area?
What is CSP area benchmarking?
County Sport Partnership (CSP) benchmarking documents were first produced in 2008 to show the number and distribution of Clubmark accredited and working towards clubs in each CSP area. Feedback indicated that the benchmark findings were very well received, so much so that they are now re-produced on an annual basis.
What does it show?
A mixture of maps, graphs and tables are used to indicate the robustness of Clubmark within each CSP area:
- Maps - the distribution of Clubmark clubs is mapped at Local Authority level, against two different backgrounds - population density and Indices of Multiple Deprivation.
- Tables - showing the numbers of Clubmark clubs at both CSP and local authority levels. These show a CSP's relative performance against other CSPs in the same region, and the levels of Clubmark activity at local authority level.
- Graphs - Clubmark accreditation trends - comparing the relevant Sport England region against the national trend and the CSP area against the regional trend of accreditation.
For example, the graphs below show the comparison of the Eastern region set against the national average and how Herts Sports Partnership fares against other CSPs in the region:

What's new for 2009?
The tables now include direct comparisons between 2008 and 2009, clearly showing growth trends at both CSP and Local Authority level.
Key headlines
Although ‘League tables' of performance at a national level are not included as part of the CSP benchmarking, some interesting facts have been thrown up as a result of the exercise over the period August 2008 to August 2009, not least of which are:
- All CSPs have seen impressive increases in Clubmark accreditation, with the nation as a whole seeing an increase of 29% in accredited clubs, year-on-year.
- Four of the ‘Top-10' performing CSPs, ranked by highest number of accreditations, are in the North West region. Is this the sporting heartland of the country?
- Three of the ‘Top 10 ‘most-improved' CSPs, ranked by increased percentage in accreditations, are in the London region. A consequence of ‘London 2012' gripping the capital?
- ‘Active Devon' and ‘sportessex' are in both of the above Top-10 lists, indicating both high levels of accreditation and increasing levels of growth. Hats off to both areas!!
Clubmark accreditation has seen good levels of growth over the last 12 months, throughout all nine Sport England regions - a considerable achievement and testament to the support for grass-roots sport at club level, through to local authorities, national governing bodies and county sport partnerships.
Despite whatever impact the UK recession is having, and the jury is still out as to the long-term effects of it on sport, the benchmarking figures suggest there is a growing awareness and confidence that Clubmark accreditation is a positive step for our sports clubs.
These reports will be with each CSP Director before Christmas and can be accessed via the Member's area of the Clubmark website thereafter.
