The National Governing Body for Aikido in the United Kingdom.
Aikido is a martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, that focuses on harmonising with your opponent, it can be practiced as a sport, self defence and an art using hand to hand and japanese weapons.

Welcome to the British Aikido Board

The British Aikido Board seeks to:-

  • Represent the majority of bona fide organisations practicing aikido in the United Kingdom.
  • Support, encourage and promote the highest standards of aikido within an environment of mutual respect for offering styles practiced.
  • Raise awareness of the value of aikido not only as a contributor towards healthy living, but also in the development of adults, young people and children, without regard to race, gender or creed.

The British Aikido Board operates primarily through its member Associations. There are 42 currently Full Member Associations with 5 Associate and Probationary Member Associations of regional and national status, who each retain their independence, both technically and financially, with a combined membership of some 5,000 , which includes 1232 instructors holding current Coaching Awards.

The Board is recognised by Sport England , as the only governing body for aikido in the United Kingdom and is a member of the Sport and Recreation Alliance.

 

The Board seeks to further the advancement of all styles of aikido and to establish and monitor standards of safety and behaviour for practitioners of aikido.

The Board advises member Associations on all relevant UK and European legislation and procedures and develops appropriate policies and codes of practice.

Other services provided include:-
•  Insurance cover, for members, instructors and Associations.
•  Promotion of a Nationally recognised Coaching Scheme in conjunction with UK Coaching / Sport England.
•  Organising a National Courses.
•  Supporting initiatives to encourage the teaching of Aikido in schools.
•  Publishing Newsletters and specialist information bulletins eg. Safeguarding and Coaching.

The Board has completed a number of initiatives, arising from the work of their major Governance Audit and through the adoption of a wide range of recommendations, contained in their Aikido Development Plan will support their key objective of encouraging all Aikido groups to join together under this “Aikido umbrella”.

Membership Application – General Information

The BAB is keen to extend the opportunity for all organisations practicing aikido, regardless of style, to join them. However, as the National Governing Body it is their responsibility to ensure that standards are maintained and that those applying are able to support the policies and criteria laid down by the Board.

Full information is contained within the Board’s Constitution, which can be viewed on the website www.bab.org.uk, but your attention is drawn to the following specific requirements:-

● Practicing a style of Aikido recognised by the Board (see Note: 1 below)
● Suitably qualified Instructors ( Non BAB Instructors will be required to obtain BAB coach Level 1 within the probationary period.)
● Those Instructing Juniors will also be required to obtain the Children’s Coaching Award and obtain a BAB DBS check.
● Appropriate Risk Assessment undertaken
● A minimum of 5 members is required for membership of the BAB..
● It is a condition of membership that all Members adopt the BAB Child Protection Policy, a copy of which can also be found on the Board’s website.

Note: 1 Although Aiki-Jutsu organisations were previously not seen as eligible to join the BAB, We are however aware that there are many like minded groups whose, style, ethos and often grading syllabus has evolved over the years and fits well with our Aikido Family. When such cases arise the Membership Officer will give advise and guidance on whether it might be more appropriate to define themselves as an Aikido Organisation.

1. Guidance on Completion of the Online Application Form:

The online application system is in two sections,

Initial application

The initial application is made by clicking on the “Create a Request to Join” Button, before clicking on this please be sure you have the following information available.

Association Name ( for small groups you need an association name as well as a club name please make the different)
Contact Name , Contact Email, Contact Phone, Contact Mobile.

Association Login Email ( It may be the Contact Email)
Association Password

Know if you are new to the BAB or Splitting from a existing BAB Association

Total number of Members (this must be greater than 5 )

Number of Adults, Number of Juniors, Number of Coaches, Number of Clubs
If you have a constitution ( If not contact the membership officer who will help you in this area)

After Completing and Saving, the system will email you and the membership team who will review your initial application, they may phone or email you to discuss your application or just approve it and ask you to start the second stage.

Main Application

Please login using the link in the email or from here using the Association Name,  Login and password you created previously.

Association

You need to gather the names, address, phone mobile and email for the following roles.
Chairman, Safeguarding Coaching, BAB Representative, BAB Registrar, Data Protection Officer. (Note:  One person can cover more than one role)

Clubs

You need to add the Name, Town, Postcode,  Email  and if previously a BAB Club.

Members
You need the Surname, First name, Middle name , Grade, DOB, Email, If previously a BAB Member, If a Coach and if has a BAB Coach Number.

During this stage you can add information save and come back and complete the application later.  When you feel you have completed your application please click on the green “Advise Application is Complete” button. this will send a email to the membership team who will deal with your application.

Genral Comments

Instructors / Clubs currently in Membership of BAB
Although not essential it would be helpful if you are able to provide the number on any Instructors membership / PI Certificates ( Please add this in the text box below the members list).

Association Officers
The Officers identified are the minimum requirement for all BAB Member Associations, but it is acceptable for one individual to hold a number of positions.

Juniors
The BAB defines a junior as being under 18 years of age.

2. The Process

On receipt of the completed Application Information the Recruitment & Membership Team will contact you to the arrange the Administration Fee (If applicable), consider if a site visit to one of your clubs is required, to gain first hand knowledge of the club in operation and the standards set by the applying organisation.

It also provides an opportunity to meet with you and seek clarification on any issues arising from the form and to provide a chance for you to discuss further the role and workings of the BAB.

The next stage is for the Recruitment & Membership Committee to make a recommendation to the BAB Chairman approves an application. 

Assuming that the application is approved you will be notified your acceptance as a New Association Member for 1 year, after which you would normally move to Full Membership.

New Members will be eligible to attend General Meetings of the Board and may take part in discussions, eligible to vote the same as  a full member. They also the same rights and  advantages of a full member, including insurance, coaching, national course, etc. 

You will be required to pay, the non refundable fees and charges for membership and insurance as published on the BAB website.

Membership – Fees & Charges

Annual Insurance Charges are set by our selected insurance company

The following apply to ALL levels of membership:-

£7.00 – Individual BAB Annual Subscription for Adults  (including instructors) & Under 18′s

Civil Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance per Venue and covers all BAB Registered Instructors  with CL1 or Above.

£50.00   – Per Venue
£100.00 – Example 2 Club Venues
£150.00 – Example 3 Club Venues

Affiliated Associations and Civil Liability

£75.00 – Associations (All)

Applications for New Membership 

£60 – Initial Application Fee (This fee is currently suspended)
